Dennis Reichard does a masterful action job on Smith & Wesson revolvers and gunsmithing work comes in from far and wide. He has convinced so many of his nationwide customers to buy S & Ws that he sells a lot of them, and perhaps for that reason he has all the latest and coolest models on hand--stuff you just can't get with a snap of the fingers in most other establishments. Sand Burr Gun Ranch has become the go-to place for all things S & W.

    Experts say:
“The self-defense market: customers want products that are light on price, heavy on value! ”

What self-defense products really are the ones recommended by gun experts? Sometimes, however, what people actually buy for self-defense is usually entirely different.

The average purchaser of a carry gun wants something small, light and easy to carry. At the same time, they want enough smack to get them through a life-threatening encounter. The guns with four-figure price tags that grace the covers of newsstand gun magazines are only fantasy firearms for many buyers. Their reality is a self-defense firearm that's light on price and heavy on value.

    Self-Defense Handguns That Sell:

Small revolvers -- particularly the lightest of their kind -- are very hot-sellers.

Dennis Reichard has owned the Sand Burr Gun Ranch in Rochester, Ind., for many years. He also has 20-some years of experience as a street cop. "In new defensive handguns, my best seller is the J-frame Smith & Wesson, in either .38 Special or .357 Magnum," Reichard said. "It's about an equal split between the Airweight .38s, the AirLite .38s and .357s, and the all-steel .357 Magnum."

Until recently, Reichard's second best-selling handgun was the little Kel-Tec P-32.
"Since Kel-Tec announced their new .380 in the same format, a lot of customers are holding off buying the .32 until they see the .380. They'd like more power," Reichard said. "I've even had a couple of customers cancel orders for P-32s and order the Kel-Tec .380s, sight unseen."

In service autos, Reichard's bestselling brand is the Ruger. "The price is right, the guns always work, and they're surprisingly accurate," Reichard said. "No one around here, except police departments, seems interested in the .40." Reichard sells about an equal split between 9mms and .45s in Ruger semi autos, and about equal numbers of aluminum- and polymer-frame models.

"Security personnel seem to particularly like the plastic - frame Rugers, while the cops who buy their own guns seem partial to the all-metal P89 9mm and P90 .45." Reichard said. "Their reputation for accuracy is a big plus. The Ruger .45 auto is a particularly accurate gun, and you just can't beat the price."

Attention: Important information about ammo for courses

Please order your ammo 30-45 days before your class. Remember that companies need to ship your ammo ground. If you order less than 30 days out you run the risk of your ammo not being here on time. And, if you order custom or reloaded ammo from Sand Burr, then we need time to make it.

If you order from another company: If you are driving to the Sand Burr for your course, please have the ammo sent to your home and bring it with you. If you are flying, then have your ammo sent directly here to Sand Burr Gun Ranch. Please get your tracking numbers from the companies you order from so you can check on the status of its delivery. Ask the supplier to put your name and the course name and dates on each box.

Or, call us for quotes on factory or custom loaded ammo! It will be here waiting for you when you arrive.

    Kubotan

The Kubotan (sometimes erroneously spelled as Kubaton or Kobutan) self-defense keychain is a close-quarter self-defense weapon developed by Takayuki Kubota. It is essentially a derivation of the yawara (?) stick, usually 5.5 inches (14cm) long and 0.56 inch (1.5 cm) in diameter, slightly thicker or the same size as a marker pen. Attached with a keyring for convenience and concealment, the Kubotan appears as an innocuous key fob to the untrained eye.

Thank you for allowing us at your home in July for the Kubotan class. Despite years of study in HapKiDo and a form of Okinawa karate (when I was not behind a desk all day) and an advanced degree or two, I still managed to learn something (go figure). I appreciate your taking time to instruct us.

Experts say: “Offer special firearms for police officers”

Special-order guns aren't something big police equipment dealers offer, because for the most part, they are looking for large-volume orders. Their businesses depend on winning the low bid, so they focus on volume. You, on the other hand, have more flexibility.

Dennis Reichard is a police detective who also runs a gun shop in Rochester, Ind. He sells a lot of guns to officers from various departments. Reichard specializes in personalized guns, favoring Smith & Wessons ordered with laser engraving from the factory.

He usually makes even more profit on the well-known custom action jobs he does himself. Fancy stocks, and other touches add to the package and his profit. Some companies, like North American Arms, will even let you order a pistol with a personalized serial number.

Off-duty/backup handguns are traditionally the backbone of gun-shop sales to police officers. In some parts of the country--New York City, for example--it is traditional for the family of a police cadet to buy him or her an off-duty gun as a present upon graduation from the police academy. In some jurisdictions, the family must present a gift certificate--something you can do, also.
